WAYNE

ABOUT WAYNE

Wayne, a quaint and historic village in the Fox River Valley just 38 miles from Chicago, is a hidden gem within Kane and DuPage counties. With a population of 2,286, Wayne is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, equestrian lifestyle, and strong sense of community. Originally settled in 1834, Wayne has grown into a place where residents enjoy a peaceful, rural environment, while preserving the area’s rich heritage.

Wayne is characterized by street names rather than traditional subdivisions, with every street serving as a private lane. The village is renowned for its lifestyle of expansive lots and estates, offering a serene and exclusive atmosphere. These spacious properties complement Wayne’s deep-rooted equestrian lifestyle. The back 10 feet of every lot in Wayne includes an easement where anyone can ride horses, connecting the village to wildlife areas and equestrian trails. This thoughtful planning enhances the community's charm and reinforces its commitment to preserving its equestrian roots.

The village is home to wide open spaces with over 3500 acres of DuPage County Forest Preserves with scenic bicycle and equestrian trails, as well as horse farms, riding centers, and boarding stables, offering a unique lifestyle that’s hard to find elsewhere in northeastern Illinois. Wayne’s dedication to this heritage is celebrated each year with the Wayne-DuPage Hunt, one of the Chicago area’s only remaining fox hunts. This event honors English hunting traditions with a humane twist, using fox scents instead of real foxes to preserve the experience while protecting wildlife.

Historic landmarks add to Wayne’s charm, such as Dunham Castle, an elegant and storied residence, and the Dunham Woods Riding Club. These sites symbolize the village’s heritage and contribute to its picturesque atmosphere. Wayne’s dedication to maintaining its rural feel is reinforced by its unique zoning laws established in 1937, which uphold a minimum of four-acre plots, ensuring that the community retains its spacious and serene character.

Wayne is also one of Illinois' safest communities, recently ranked 7th statewide. The village is served by both the well-regarded St. Charles District 303 and Elgin Area School District U-46, offering excellent education options. Whether you're drawn by its scenic beauty, equestrian lifestyle, or close-knit community, Wayne offers a truly exceptional place to call home.
