With access to the picturesque Fox River, lush parks, and miles of trails, Batavia provides residents and visitors with countless ways to connect with nature, get some fresh air, and enjoy recreational activities year-round. Below are some of the best outdoor attractions and activities you can enjoy in and around Batavia:
Batavia Riverwalk
One of Batavia's most beloved outdoor destinations is the Batavia Riverwalk, a beautiful path along the Fox River that provides scenic views and recreational opportunities. The path features a boardwalk leading to the North Point Pavilion, which offers a stunning view of the river. As you continue along the path, you’ll encounter the Batavia Dam and the peaceful Riverwalk Wildflower Sanctuary. The Riverwalk also showcases historic windmills produced from the mid-1800s until the 1940s. The walk is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, and it connects to the Fox River Bike Trail. The park includes a playground, picnic area, shelter, kayak rentals, fishing area, bike share, and even an outdoor ice rink during the winter months. Whether you’re fishing, biking, or simply relaxing, the Riverwalk offers something for everyone.
Les Arends Forest Preserve
For a more immersive nature experience, head to Les Arends Forest Preserve, which protects over 3,600 feet of Fox River shoreline. This small, peaceful preserve features a few miles of the paved Fox River Regional Bike trail, making it a favorite for those who enjoy outdoor recreation. Fishing enthusiasts will love the access to floodplain islands, which are excellent habitats for local fish.
Fabyan Windmill
Located just north of Batavia in Geneva, the Fabyan Windmill is a authentic, working Dutch windmill that dates back to the 1850s. This five-story wooden smock mill with a stage is a significant piece of Batavia’s history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Dutch Mill. It was also honored in 1980 by its selection to be on a U.S. Postal stamp as part of the "WINDMILLS USA" series featuring only five American windmills.
Visitors can take a guided tour to learn about the windmill’s history and how it originally operated as a custom grinding mill with a bakery in the basement — a rare feature for mills. Although it no longer grinds flour, the restored grinding mechanisms offer visitors a unique insight into how the windmill once operated. The mill stands 68 feet tall and is situated on the onetime estate of Colonel George Fabyan, but is now part of the Kane County Forest Preserve District, and is a excellent opportunity for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone interested in exploring Batavia's rich heritage or enjoy the picturesque surroundings of the Fabyan Windmill.

Ice Skating at Depot Pond
For a fun winter activity, Depot Pond offers an enchanting opportunity to ice skate in the heart of Batavia during the winter months. Located near the Batavia Depot Museum, the pond has a rich history as part of the Fox River. The area where the Batavia Depot Museum, Walgreens, and McDonald’s now stand was once part of a channel of the Fox River, which is how Island Avenue got its name—it was originally an island. Because this channel wasn’t part of the river’s main current, it would freeze over faster in winter, making it an ideal spot for ice skating. This natural feature helped create a beloved tradition of ice skating in Batavia with many local families and individuals looking forward to ice skating on Depot Pond each winter. Access to a warming center at the Peg Bond Center is available, offering a cozy break for skaters to warm up. Ice skate rentals are not available, so make sure to bring your own skates and enjoy a day on the ice. The pond, which serves as a picturesque ice skating rink during the winter, transforms into a tranquil spot for paddling in the warmer months.

Equestrians can take advantage of designated horseback riding trails, which primarily consist of natural surface paths or mowed grass.
